SYNOD REPORT

Companions Meet Together

The Synod of our Companion Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf assembles once a year only - for a five day residential meeting. Being in one place for worship, business sessions, and social contact greatly helps everyone to get to know each other - in all 150. This year Synod included the Bishops of Exeter and Thika and their wives and colleagues, and the three Bishops re-affirmed their covenant together at the final Eucharist in Nicosia Cathedral. Some Kenyan music was included in the service. During Synod each Bishop talked about his Diocese & particular problems unfamiliar in the other two Dioceses, and the Kenyans introduced these with song.

A feature of this Synod is that besides clergy and lay representatives all Chaplaincies are encouraged to bring observers, who can participate in the Open Forum - of which there were two. The Synod started with a Quiet Day, led by Bishop Michael, in an Orthodox monastery. Formal Synod business included familiar items, but included verbal reports (to back up written ones) from each Chaplaincy to emphasise current work and concerns. Copies of the reports are being sent in our Diocese to the Deanery Link representative so that they can be passed on to Deanery Synods. Many reports spoke of expanding congregations - of many nationalities - but of financial constraints. Ordinands and Readers in the pipeline were reported as eight - and it was good to see two new Deacons from the Diocese present - both with Devon connections.

There was a general debate on finance and a special study of their needs and resources is to be undertaken, arising from an expressed need to balance income and expenditure. Other reports came from the Province and its other Dioceses, and news of the establishment of a Diocesan Quiet House for retreats in Cyprus. Five days well spent - was rounded off by a final dinner held at a Nicosia Sports Centre. Members of Synod dispersed next day almost certainly refreshed & inspired for the year ahead.

An opportunity to hear more about Cyprus and the Gulf will take place at Exeter Cathedral on Sat 29 July 06 when an Open Meeting in the Chapter House, will follow after a Eucharist in the Lady Chapel at 12noon. Celebrant will be the Dean of Nicosia Cathedral - Enquiries Denis Hutchings 01822615946.
