The Right Reverend
Michael Lewis, 54, began his ministry as Bishop of the Diocese of
Cyprus and the Gulf
in 2007.
For eight years prior to that he was Bishop of Middleton, where he
had day-to-day oversight for parishes and people in Central, South,
and East Manchester as well as Lancashire towns like Rochdale,
Oldham, and Ashton-under-Lyne. He also had school, college, and
university responsibilities on behalf of the Church both locally and
nationally.
A native of Hampshire, he read Oriental Studies (Hebrew, Aramaic,
and Syriac) and, as a second degree,
Theology, at Merton College Oxford and Cuddesdon Theological
College.
He was ordained in 1978 and, before Manchester, served in parish and
higher education posts in the
Dioceses of Southwark (South London) and Worcester.
He and Julia have three children, Paul, Eleanor, andGeorge, and a
grandson, Jacob.
