A STATEMENT BY BISHOP MICHAEL LEWIS - 25 October 2009 “The Rt Revd Michael Lewis, Bishop of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf and at present travelling in the Arabian Peninsula, telephoned Canon Andrew White on Sunday evening to hear details of the devastating bomb blasts of the morning of Sunday 25 October very close to St George's Anglican church on Haifa Street in Baghdad. ‘Canon White, currently in England for preaching engagements but due to be back in Iraq soon, is examining photographs of the widespread damage to the church compound. The dental and general medical clinics and the Mothers' Union kitchen and food-aid facility have apparently suffered terribly, with equipment destroyed beyond use. Church vehicles, vital for transporting worshippers, have been wrecked. The lovingly landscaped and tended grounds, in which many children play, are a wilderness. While the church building itself stands, windows, both glass and frames, have been blown out entirely. ‘The photographs were emailed by a key lay leader. At present it is unclear whether church members were among the dead and wounded. ‘Bishop Michael and his wife Julia paid their most recent visit to St George's at the start of the summer, where well over a thousand people greeted them at the principal Eucharist. "The faith and love of the people of St George's is powerful and extraordinary. So is their resilience," he said. "It's heartbreaking to think that the clinics, which I opened last year and have been in constant use since then by Baghdadis irrespective of creed or affiliation, have suffered so badly. But the impressive Iraqi leadership team, together with Andrew White, will be determined to carry on witnessing to the unstoppable compassion of God in that great, battered city.” |

STATEMENT BY THE BISHOP IN CYPRUS AND THE GULF The Bishop in Cyprus and the Gulf, the Rt Revd Michael Lewis, announces, with effect from 1 June 2009, the appointment of the Rt Revd Azad Marshall as Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, to perform such functions peculiar and appropriate to the Order of Bishops as Bishop Michael may from time to time authorize. Bishop Azad is Diocesan Bishop in Iran and a brother bishop in the Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East. In particular, such Urdu-language churches and congregations as have hitherto looked to Bishop Azad for episcopal ministry will now avail themselves of that ministry within the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf while looking to Bishop Michael as their Ordinary and diocesan bishop. Please pray for Bishop Azad and for Lesley his wife. + Michael Cyprus & the Gulf: 1 June 2009 |

STATEMENT BY THE BISHOP IN CYPRUS AND THE GULF BAGHDAD News from Baghdad of the recent atrocities in and just outside the Green Zone is every bit as sad as anything that has come out of that city since the invasion. Many deaths of people harmlessly going about their business and lives have occurred. I have talked to Canon Andrew White as the situation has unfolded. Although it would not seem that St George's was among the significant buildings targeted, the church, clinic, and the other buildings within our Anglican compound have suffered damage, not least the loss yet again of glass from all the windows. There have almost certainly been injuries or worse among the large number of people who use the compound and are part of the community of St George's. My heart and prayers go out to all in Baghdad: to those of the various Christian traditions and to their brothers and sisters of Islam and other faiths. Please pray for the victims of war, terrorism, and poverty. + Michael Cyprus & the Gulf: 20 August 2009 |
