Eye and Medical Clinics
Christ Church Centre, Aden
The Clinics – overview
| Christ Church runs
two clinics for Yemenis – a general medical clinic, and an eye
clinic. These form the largest part of our work in Aden. Medical Clinic The medical clinic started as a clinic for mothers and babies in 1996, formed as part of the conditions for re-opening the church. We were given the local area to serve, containing approximately 40 000 people. Due to the number of husbands, sons and brothers who needed medical advice and treatment as well as the mothers and babies, we soon expanded. Today, under the umbrella of the medical clinic we have a well-equipped laboratory and a pharmacy. We provide pre- and post-natal care to mothers, and advice and disease prevention to the inhabitants of our low-income catchment area. For a yearly subscription of 800 Yemeni Rials ($4), they will have unlimited treatment, and free medication for basic illnesses. In extreme circumstances we are also able to help some families with more expensive treatment. In 2007, the medical clinic saw over 14 000 patients. Eye Clinic The Eye clinic was set up in 2002, and forms the better-known part of our work. It is separate from the medical clinic, and there is a subscription fee of 200 YR ($1). For this, patients get examinations and limited treatment. For more expensive treatment (such as operations), the patients are expected to pay, although in some circumstances the price is negotiable. The patients must also pay for glasses. Patients come from all over Yemen, and the clinics also do outreach to schools, institutions, and to the Province of Lahej, the city of Mocha, and the island of Socotra. In 2007, the Eye team saw approximately 6000 patients, and conducted 700 operations. |

| The
extension to the Eye and Medical clinics - which forms the major
part of our outreach to the people of Yemen - was completed in
October 2002. Further pictures
can be seen in this April 2002
newsletter. Since then we have gone from strength to strength - in 2004 and 2005 the Medical Clinic has treated 12,000 patients a year and a great number of operations have been carried out in the Eye Clinic. - See here...... and for more early news, see here..... |
