Diocesan Prayer Fellowship

Oman

4th November, 2007
The Fourth Sunday before Advent

Thursday Saints and Martyrs of England
Wednesday Raymond Lull of Tunis

The Protestant Church in Oman is a growing family committed to serving Christ ecumenically in a tranquil and beautiful part of our diocese.  We offer a variety of worship styles and are staffed by a diverse team of pastors, presently guided by the Rev. Edward Schreur of the Reformed Church in America.

During the past year the church's pastoral team has been in transition.  Pastor Dutt, a Baptist who served faithfully for the past ten years, left Oman to undertake a missionary venture in Nepal.  Pastor Todd, our Youth for Christ worker, ended his employment.  Pastor Ruth, Anglican, also completed her term of service.  Pray that our community will be furthered by God's grace as we employ a new Arabic pastor and two pastors from India, one to serve in Sohar and one in Muscat.

Pray that a new Anglican co-chaplain will be in place to represent our diocese on the clerical team.  Pray that God will bind our fellowship together so that our work is collegial and uses all the diverse gifts bestowed upon us by God.  Prosper our presence in the growing city of Sohar and pray that God will rebuild a pathway whereby we can serve the many communities which long for our active presence in the interior.

Saints and Martyrs of England:  May God preserve in our memory a place of gratitude for those who in turbulent times envisioned and brought to life the faith we receive from one generation to another

Raymond Lull of Tunis:
We lift up in prayer this day a scholar, mystic and ardent evangelist who in the 13th Century fostered interfaith work by encouraging the teaching of Arabic in seminaries and the need to be conversant with both Jewish and Islamic texts.  Raymond was born in Majorca, Spain in 1232 and died in Tunis in 1315 due to wounds inflicted by stones cast at him by an angry mob.  In 1300 he visited Cyprus as part of his efforts to raise the standards of education for Middle Eastern Christians.  We honour him today as a forerunner of our own interfaith efforts, particularly at the Al Amana Centre in Muscat
