Meeting With the Prime Minister
5th March 2007

An extensive meeting with the Prime Minister was held on 5th March between Lord Carey the former Archbishop of Canterbury and Canon Andrew White the President of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East (FRME). The main discussion of the meeting was concerning religiously inspired violence in Iraq and Israel and Palestine. The Prime Minister said that he followed Canon White’s work closely and held it in highest regard. He said it was more important than ever to engage with religious leaders to try and reduce violence. Stating that he totally supported the need for religious leaders from Iraq to meet. The recently planed meeting of Iraqi Religious Leaders organised by the FRRME was recently cancelled by the FCO. The Prime Minister said he totally supported this meeting taking place; plans are now being made to for this to happen next month.

The issue of Israel and Palestine was also discussed and the Prime Minister agreed that there was a need to continue the Alexandria Process. This initiative instigated by Lord Carey and Canon White is still perceived as the main religious track of the peace process. A major meeting of this process is planned for next week in Jerusalem.

Other issues discussed included the issue of the growing number of internally displaced people in Iraq and the need to bring Islamic Iraqi and Palestinian religious leaders to the UK. The Prime Minister assured his total support for the work of FRRME and made it clear that he acknowledged its unique function
