Ayia Napa: finding community in tradition

Christ Church Ayia Napa celebrated the commemoration of Jesus’s baptism with a service of Holy Communion on Sunday (12 January), led by parish priest the Reverend George Vidiakin.

The congregation was pleased to welcome Ayia Napa deputy mayor Antonis Christou, who was invited to undertake the traditional cutting of the vasilopita—a New Year’s cake baked with a coin in the mix. A symbolic moment highlighting the blessings of the day came with the very first slice, which tradition dedicates to Jesus—and which was revealed to contain the coin.

The administrator of the Scandinavian church, Camilla Asprou, was also present, joining Revd George and Mr Christou to discuss future cooperation between the two congregations and the municipality.

“The gathering was marked by a joyful sense of community, and a shared appreciation of a cherished tradition,” said Revd George. “Christ Church thanks all who joined in this memorable event. May 2025 bring God’s blessing!”
