Christ Church Ayia Napa and the Scandinavian Church had the joy of holding a beautiful and warmly received service of Lessons and Carols last night.
“The service had a deeply ecumenical character and was filled throughout with joy and a genuine Christmas spirit,” says the Reverend George Vidiakin, who led the service with the valued participation of the Reverend Anders Bondesson, pastor of the Scandinavian Church, and the Reverend Jon Albert Ihelebaek of the Norwegian Church Abroad. Music was performed by Turid Ihelebaek.
The atmosphere throughout the evening was one of inclusion and a shared celebration of the Christmas message. “Bible readings were proclaimed in two languages—English, and Swedish or Norwegian, and the same spirit marked the music, with some of the most loved and familiar Christmas hymns sung and performed in three languages.”
Alongside well-known English carols, the congregation greatly appreciated Scandinavian hymns including ‘Deilig er jorden’ and ‘Lyss till änglasångens ljud’.”
“The service was a wonderful example of ecumenical cooperation and a heartfelt celebration of Christmas,” says Fr George, “followed by a welcoming gathering for traditional Swedish ginger biscuits and friendly conversation.”
