On 21 August Mrs Jocelyn Henderson, Churchwarden Emerita of St Andrew Abu Dhabi, celebrated her hundredth birthday at her home within the grounds of the Royal Stables, Abu Dhabi.
The widow of Edward Henderson, soldier, oil explorer, diplomat, and finally British Ambassador to Qatar from 1971 to 1974, Jocelyn previously had a career as private secretary to Winston Churchill’s daughter Sarah and also worked for luminaries of the film industry such as Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
After life with her husband in postings such as Bahrain, Jerusalem, and Oman as well as Doha, she and Edward returned to Abu Dhabi in what had formerly been the Trucial States, now the UAE. She presided over the Daly Library within St Andrew’s for many years. Here she is seen with HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak al Nahyan, member of the ruling family and senior government minister.
