On Orthodox Good Friday yesterday parishioners from across Cyprus gathered in the Old City of Nicosia to experience a local Orthodox tradition of venerating the Epitaphios—the beautifully adorned bier bearing the icon of Christ laid in the tomb.
Following the morning service of the Apokathilosis commemorating the Descent from the Cross, the faithful visit an odd number of churches—perhaps one, three, five or seven—moving between the many Orthodox places of worship clustered within the Venetian walls.
The route was filled with worshippers as the group moved from St Savvas to Archangel Michael Tripiotis, the Cathedral of St Barnabas, St Anthony, Our Lady Chrysaliniotissa, St Cassian and, finally, Our Lady Phaneromeni.
The walk provided an opportunity to engage with the historical and ecclesiastical heritage of Nicosia with local friends, and to hear reflections on the liturgical traditions of the days of Holy Week in Eastern Christianity. It was also a beautifully devotional experience, offering a prayerful immersion into one of the most solemn and profound days of the Christian year.
