The heart of Ayia Napa came alive this week to the stirring sounds of Twilight Harmonies, an open-air concert of classical music against the backdrop of the town’s iconic mediaeval monastery.
Organised by Christ Church Ayia Napa on 5 June, the fundraising event featured the celebrated Russian-Cypriot pianist Tatiana Stupak, a recipient of the President of Cyprus Award—and holder of a Guinness World Record for performing the world’s highest concert, at 6701 metres, atop Mount Aconcagua in Argentina. She was joined by the internationally acclaimed coloratura soprano Elena Soskova and Olivera Rialas (violin). Among the guests was British composer David Pentecost, a regular collaborator with Stupak, whose performance included his work Nocturne.
Ayia Napa Deputy Mayor Antonis Christou was also in attendance, highlighting the cultural and civic significance of the evening. The municipality played an active role in supporting the event, providing the venue, lighting, sound system and seating.
As the music rose into the dusk, Bach/Gounod’s Ave Maria and Mozart’s joyful Alleluia resonated deeply with the sacred setting, especially poignant given that the monastery is dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus.
A unique tribute to the spirituality of Cyprus, Christ Church parish priest the Reverend George Vidiakin described the event as “a moving occasion, drawing together through music the island’s history and faith, at one of its most beloved landmarks”.
“The blend of soaring vocals, brilliant piano and the timeless beauty of the monastery created a moment that will long remain in the hearts of those present.”
