Stillness and reverence: Taizé at Christ Church Ayia Napa

Congregants from across Cyprus gathered at Christ Church Ayia Napa yesterday for a time of reflection and prayer in the distinctive style of Taizé.

Led by the Revd George Vidiakin, worshippers from the Scandinavian Church, Christ Church and other Anglican parishes joined in a rhythm of silence, Scripture and singing. Much-loved Taizé chants offered in English, Latin, Swedish and Norwegian reflected the international and ecumenical character of the community—including ‘Laudate omnes gentes’, sung in four languages and so embodying its very message: ‘Praise the Lord, all you peoples’ (Ps 117:1). The chants were led and accompanied by Terje Holmedahl, Director of Music of the Scandinavian Church.

The Scripture readings reminded the congregation that the Church is now in Passiontide, drawing ever closer to Holy Week. In this sacred season, the faithful are invited to prepare their hearts for the mystery of the Cross and Resurrection. Indeed, the atmosphere throughout was one of stillness and reverence.

The Taizé Community was established in 1940 when Brother Roger Schutz, a Swiss Reformed Christian, founded a small monastic community in the village of Taizé in France. Over time, Taizé became a place of pilgrimage, especially for young people from around the world seeking prayer and simplicity.

Taizé is widely known for its distinctive form of worship: meditative prayer centred on short, repetitive chants, often sung in multiple languages, interspersed with silence and Scripture.
