Kyrenia Music Week reaches crescendo

Music Week at St Andrew’s church in Kyrenia was brought to a crescendo with a concert on Saturday in memory of former church music director Earl Moffitt.

The programme included the Music Week Choir performing When in our music God is glorified – C.V. Stanford; Lead me Lord – S.S. Wesley; and There’s a wideness in God’s mercy – Maurice Bevan; as well as duets by Lena Stern (piano) with Katerina Stern (violin), and with Maria Semochkina (soprano).

This year’s Music Week was facilitated Emma Gibbins, Director of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral in England. The audience was especially fortunate to hear Emma on the organ, playing Nun danket alle Gott – Karg Elert, Prière à Notre-Dame (from Suite Gothique) – Léon Boëllmann, and Sortie in E flat – Alfred Lefébure-Wély. (Watch Emma play here

“The unanimous verdict was–Earl would have loved this!” said Linda Balfe. “The church was full, the musicians outstanding and the atmosphere one of joy tinged with sadness, full of love and deep appreciation.

“A huge thank you to everyone, especially to our Music Week Director, Emma Gibbins and guest musicians Maria Semochkina, and Lena and Katerina Stern. A wonderful tribute to a very special man.”
